  • 10 Years with Graves Disease: From Chaos to Clarity.

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. I think it’s because I’m edging towards the 10-year anniversary of my diagnosis with Graves Disease (can you call it an anniversary if it feels more like an emotional rollercoaster than a celebration?). Graves is an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism and, in my case, decided to throw in a degenerative eye condition for good measure. I've talked before about how my diagnosis was the catalyst for creating MAKaesthetics, but today I want to go a little deeper. Because when I look back, every decision I made in 2015 — even the messy, chaotic ones — was like a stepping stone that led me exactly where I’m meant to be. This could easily turn into a novel (I do love a tangent), so let’s keep it concise. Here’s the TL;DR of my journey so far from 2015-2020: 2015: Diagnosis, Europe, and Chaos Mid-2015 : Diagnosed with Graves Disease. 2 months later : Moved to Europe with my then boyfriend (because, clearly, what better time to uproot your life?). We opened a café together — I was running purely on adrenaline at this stage, so why not?! No medical help overseas, and my health declined severely. I dropped to 45kg and felt like a shadow of myself. When I finally returned to Australia (relationship in shambles), my own dad didn’t even recognise me at the airport. I’ve shared a photo of what I looked like back then on here before — go find it if you’re looking for a jump scare. 2016: A Spark of Hope Late 2016 : Traveled to Vietnam with a new partner, and my passion for holistic health practices was ignited. My health wasn’t getting worse, but it wasn’t improving either. Graves Disease still had me in a chokehold. Then came the crushing news: I was going into early menopause and told I wouldn’t be able to have children and would need to start HRT. Around this time, I went back to floristry, which is actually how I met my now-husband. (The universe works in weird ways, huh?) 2017: New Beginnings Early 2017 : Started dating my now-husband. A couple of months later… surprise! I was pregnant. We moved in together, and this pregnancy felt like it saved my life. I gained 18kg, and for the first time in years, I felt stronger than ever. I became obsessed with learning about the human body — partly out of necessity and partly because, well, knowledge is power when your body doesn’t come with a user manual. January 2018 : My son was born. Doctors and specialists urged me to get radiation or surgery to manage my thyroid, warning me that if I wanted another child, I needed to act fast. I listened politely and then said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” June 2018 : Surprise, surprise — I was pregnant again. 2019: Clarity at Last March 2019 : My daughter was born, and my body was absolutely depleted by the end of that pregnancy. With a 14-month-old and a newborn, I knew I needed to get serious about my health. I couldn’t just survive — I needed to thrive. I started working with a naturopath, who explained that my thyroid wasn’t the root issue. It was just a symptom of an immune system that was completely out of tune. Cue the lightbulb moment. And that’s when it all clicked. Everything I had been through — every challenge, every twist and turn — had led me to this moment. I finally understood that my purpose wasn’t just to heal myself. It was to help others redefine how they age, heal, and thrive, too. 2020: Starting Over During a Pandemic Early 2020 : I officially launched MAKaesthetics. I was ready, motivated, and excited... and then COVID-19 had other plans. I spent the next year in lockdown — not exactly the entrepreneurial launch I had envisioned. After some soul-searching (and a lot of waiting), we made the decision to move to Brisbane to relaunch my business (and our life). Looking back now, I see how every heartbreak, every setback, and every wild decision was part of the bigger picture. It’s strange, isn’t it? How life feels like chaos when you’re in the thick of it, but in hindsight, all the pieces fit together perfectly. Creating MAKaesthetics wasn’t just a business move — it was the natural evolution of everything I’ve learned on this journey. I know firsthand what it feels like to be lost in your own body, and I know how powerful it feels to reclaim your health, your strength, and your life. So, here’s to the past 10 years — the messy, unpredictable, beautiful decade that brought me here. And here’s to whatever comes next. If you’re still reading, thanks for sticking with me. Life may be wild, but at least we’re in it together. 💛 Big love, Mel x

  •  Infrared Light Therapy for Hormonal Health.

Infrared Red Light should be your best friend... now hear me out. As a lot of my clients know, I am extremely passionate about women's hormonal health and the things we can do to live and feel better every day. Because I suffer from PCOS myself, I know the struggle of how hormones can really make or break your day at times.   After doing a lot of research and trying it out for myself, I can honestly say that infrared light is a game changer. To avoid getting too "sciencey" and keep it simple, your body is made up of millions of cells, and the health of those cells will determine your well- being. Infrared light works by using specific wavelengths of light to stimulate our cellular function. When these light wavelengths touch our skin, they're absorbed by our mitochondria- our cells 'little' powerhouses helping them to produce ATP, which is basically the energy currency of life.  But how does this all tie into your hormonal health? By using these wavelengths, it can stimulate testosterone production and help regulate estrogen levels. It also reduces inflammation in the body, which is great for endometriosis and period cramps. It has been shown to give our ovarian function a major boost and assist with the creation and maturation of eggs within our ovaries. Hormonal regulation is complex, and I've definitely realized it takes consistency and patience. I'll keep you updated on my journey, but adding sessions of infrared light has definitely had an amazing impact on my PCOS and hormonal health.

  • Why MAKaesthetics Focuses on Cellular Health for Optimal Wellness

Here at MAKaesthetics, we believe that true wellness begins on a cellular level. While many approaches to health focus on diet, exercise, and general wellness practices, we understand that the foundation of optimal well-being lies within the intricate workings of our body’s cells. By prioritising cellular health, we provide our clients with advanced strategies to enhance their overall vitality and wellness. Understanding Cellular Health To appreciate the importance of cellular health, it's essential to understand the different levels of organisation within our bodies: Cells: The fundamental units of life, each cell requires energy and proper DNA function to perform optimally. Supporting cellular health enhances the vitality and performance of all bodily systems. Tissues: Groups of cells that work together to perform specific functions. For example, muscle tissue relies on healthy muscle cells to facilitate movement and strength. Organs: Structures made up of various tissues working together to perform vital functions. Healthy organs depend on the optimal function of their constituent tissues and cells. Organ Systems: Networks of organs that collaborate to carry out essential bodily functions. The health of these systems hinges on the well-being of their individual organs, tissues, and cells. Why Focus on Cellular Health? Many health practices target organ systems, but we believe in addressing health at the cellular level for deeper, more effective results: Mitochondria: Mitochondria convert glucose into ATP, the energy currency of the cell. Supporting mitochondrial health ensures efficient energy production, reduces oxidative stress, and gives your cells the boost they need—because who doesn't want their cells to feel like they've had a triple shot of espresso for accelerated healing?! DNA: The genetic blueprint of our cells, DNA integrity is crucial for proper cell function. Protecting DNA from damage caused by UV radiation and toxins is essential for maintaining cellular health. How MAKaesthetics Supports Cellular Health We offer a range of advanced therapies designed to enhance cellular health, promoting overall wellness and vitality: Red Light Therapy: Stimulates mitochondria, boosting cellular energy production, reducing inflammation, and promoting skin rejuvenation. Cupping Therapy: Enhances blood flow, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to cells, aiding in detoxification and cellular repair. Fat Cavitation: Targets and breaks down fat cells, helping to reduce systemic inflammation and supports overall cellular function. RF Skin Tightening: Uses radiofrequency to stimulate collagen production, improving skin elasticity and cellular structure. EMS Muscle Strengthening: Employs electromagnetic muscle stimulation to enhance muscle function, energy use, and overall cellular efficiency. Lymphatic Drainage: Facilitates the removal of toxins and waste products from cells, boosting immune function and cellular health. Why Choose MAKaesthetics? By focusing on cellular health, we provide a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of health issues rather than just the symptoms. Our boutique clinic offers a compassionate and supportive environment where you can feel heard, understood, and cared for. With our advanced therapies and personalised care, we aim to help you reclaim your strength, vitality, and confidence. Book your appointment today and discover how focusing on cellular health with MAKaesthetics can elevate your well-being to new heights - and as always, if you have any questions, we are always happy to help so please don't hesitate to reach out to us! Big love, Mel x

  • A Source of Stillness: Calm Mind, Healthy Body with Facial Reflexology

If you're anything like me, finding moments of stillness can feel like a luxury. In my heart of hearts, I know that in the pursuit of well-being, embracing stillness and calming the mind are not just niceties; they are essential practices that contribute to a healthier, more vibrant life. Stillness provides a sanctuary for the mind, allowing it to quiet the noise, reduce stress, and restore balance. Moments of stillness have been scientifically linked to improved mental clarity, better decision-making, and enhanced emotional resistance. Incase you haven't been following our socials, we have recently introduced a 'Build Your Own Facial' program which we have carefully curated to include a range of facial treatments that stem from holistic or ancient practices. The idea behind this, is that you have total control over your facial experience, being able to give yourself a luxurious goddess style pampering or a quick to-the-point treatment, it's totally up to you. One of the options we have available is Facial Reflexology, bringing a novel and effective dimension to the pursuit of tranquility. Scientifically linked to reducing stress and promoting mental clarity, this ancient technique holds the key to achieving a peaceful state of mind - But, what is it exactly? Facial Reflexology involves the application of pressure to specific reflex points on the face, corresponding to different organs and systems within the body. Beyond its physical benefits, this practice has a remarkable impact on mental well-being. The gentle touch and focused attention not only induce relaxation but also alleviate tension, making it an ideal tool for calming the mind and regulating the nervous system. The mind-body connection is at the core of facial reflexology's efficacy. By calming the mind, this practice creates a ripple effect throughout the body - stress reduction, improved sleep, and enhanced mood are just a few of the holistic benefits. Embrace the solace of stillness, Facial Reflexology is a source of calm amidst the chaotic rat race we are currently living in. Your future self will thank you! If you have read this far and would love to try a complimentary Facial Reflexology flow at your next appointment, add it to your booking and use promo code 'FLOW'.

  • Say Goodbye to Inflammaging with These Proven Methods

Back in 2015, I was diagnosed with Graves Disease - an autoimmune disorder which leads to an overactive thyroid, wreaking havoc on the body's metabolism and overall well-being. If I had of known what I knew now, there are 2 key steps I would have taken to nurture my body back to its full potential and avoid becoming so severely unwell. For context, this is me (left) 6 months before being diagnosed. Looking back, the first sign that my body was struggling was that I started to quickly lose weight and my heart would randomly start beating really quick at random times in the day (I just put this down to anxiety, which is something I have always dealt with). Within months, my health started to deteriorate and the heart palpitations turned into hand tremors, sweats, and eventually blurry vision as my immune system started to attack the tissues behind my eyes (graves eye disease). I don't remember taking this photo of myself, but this was me at my worst. My eyes were so swollen and protruded out of my head so far that every night I had to use sticky tape to keep them closed because I couldn't physically shut them myself. My mental health was going out the window as I was in constant pain and dis ease. Around this time, I started seeing multiple naturopaths, homeopaths, and various holistic healers. If I was to follow a conventional medical plan, I would have had my thyroid removed altogether but I really didn't see the point in that since it would mean I would be on synthetic hormones for the rest of my life. If I had of known back then, what I knew now, these would be the 2 key things I would have started doing immediately to maintain my health and avoid a traumatic 3 years. If you're still following along at this point, thank you for your patience! Let's get into it! Light Therapy The healing potential of light therapy, with a heavy focus on infrared and red light wavelengths, holds a spectrum of benefits for cellular rejuvenation and immune resilience. Infrared and red light therapies stimulate cellular activity, positively influencing mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress. Enhanced mitochondrial function regulates cellular processes, fostering regeneration and greater general health. In other words, the light from infrared and red light wavelengths is absorbed by your cells and turned into energy which stimulates cellular turnover. The significance of a healthy cellular turnover rate will greatly affect bodily functions from your immune system to organ function and even how quickly (or slowly) your ageing process takes place. Lymphatic Drainage The lymphatic system, crucial for waste removal and fluid balance, intertwines with immune resilience, supporting cellular health and overall vitality. The lymphatic system clears away cellular debris and inflammatory byproducts, which is crucial for immune health. It also ensures effective nutrient transport to muscles and vital organs, contributing to overall cellular vitality. The synergy of light therapy and lymphatic drainage offers a comprehensive approach to our health, fortifying the immune system and even decelerating the ageing process. Efficient lymphatic and circulatory systems support immune function by facilitating the movement of immune cells throughout the body. A well-functioning lymphatic system ensures timely removal of toxins and pathogens, bolstering the body's defense systems. Chronic inflammation, which is often linked to autoimmune conditions, can accelerate the ageing process. From 2015-2018 I could see myself ageing rapidly, I now know this was due to a compromised cellular turnover rate. My body was fighting so hard to find regulation, there was no extra energy for my cells to regenerate or renew. Managing inflammation through practices like light therapy and lymphatic drainage may help decelerate ageing and promote longevity. Here at MAKaesthetics, we embrace the transformative synergy of light therapy and optimal lymphatic health to open a holistic path towards enhanced vitality, immune strength, and a more youthful and vibrant you. Don't wait until your health is on the decline - embracing these therapies while you are in peak form will ensure you maintain your health. Chat to us today to see what the best options are to nurture your body's full potential! Thank you for reading :) Big love, Mel

  • The ageing process is only 25% genetics. The rest is up to you.

Hi everyone, don't worry - I'm not here to sell you vitamins or sign you up to an MLM. I simply want to shed some light on these two topics that have really peaked my interest while continuing with my longevity coaching training. I will keep it short and direct, I promise! Aging is a natural and inevitable part of life (dah), but understanding its intricacies can help us take control of our well-being and guide us into living a purpose-driven life! Cellular Senescence Cellular senescence is a state in which cells lose their ability to divide and replicate. While this may sound like a protective mechanism to prevent the development of cancer, it has a downside. Senescent cells accumulate over time, releasing molecules that cause inflammation and damage to neighboring cells, tissues, and organs. This damage contributes to the overall decline in tissue function, interfering with the regenerative capacity of tissues, hindering the proliferation and function of nearby healthy cells. Inflammaging Inflammaging describes the low-level inflammation that accompanies the ageing process. This smoldering inflammation is believed to be a key driver of many age-related diseases. Inflammaging has been closely linked to cellular senescence, creating a vicious cycle. Unlike acute inflammation, which is a normal and protective response to injury or infection, inflammaging is a chronic and sustained inflammatory state. The consequences of inflammaging extend beyond individual diseases. The persistent low-grade inflammation is believed to play a role in the ageing process itself, contributing to the gradual decline in physiological function and the increased vulnerability to various health issues associated with advancing age. So what does this have to do with MAKaesthetics? Everything. Our Approach to Healthy Ageing At MAKaesthetics, we offer a range of treatments designed to enhance your well-being, boost your confidence, and slow down or prevent the effects of cellular senescence and inflammaging. Reducing Inflammation: Our services help to combat the effects of inflammation associated with ageing. From Radiofrequency Skin Tightening to stimulate collagen production to EMS Sculpting for muscle health, our treatments contribute to your overall well-being, reducing the impact of inflammaging. Cellular Rejuvenation: We're not just improving your external appearance; we're also big on promoting cellular rejuvenation through our therapies. From reducing stubborn fat with cavitation treatments to regenerating and recharging the body on a cellular level with infrared and red light therapy - we're assisting your body in its natural detoxification and rejuvenation process, mitigating the effects of cellular senescence. In closing, let's embrace the beauty of ageing while arming ourselves with the knowledge to navigate its complexities. Ageing is a journey, and understanding the intricacies of cellular senescence and inflammaging empowers us to make informed choices for our well-being. At MAKaesthetics, we're not just here to sell you on quick fixes or empty promises. We're on a mission to enhance your well-being, boost your confidence, and support you in finding life satisfaction. Age is just a number, and with the right approach, we can age with strength, vitality, and a sense of fulfillment. Here's to embracing the wisdom that comes with each passing year and living a life that radiates vitality! Big love, Mel

  • MAKaesthetics: The Origin Story

In July 2015, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Graves' disease. For those unfamiliar with this autoimmune disorder, Graves' disease primarily affects the thyroid gland, causing it to become overactive and produce an excess of thyroid hormones. This, in turn, can lead to a range of health issues, including weight loss, heart palpitations, and anxiety. Shortly after this diagnosis, I made the life-altering decision to move to Cyprus (Europe) with my then boyfriend. Little did I know that this move would plunge me into a toxic relationship that would isolate me from my family and friends. I found myself in a situation where seeking medical help for my deteriorating health became increasingly difficult. For the remainder of my time in Cyprus, I wasted away into a shell of a girl. I weighed 45kg, my hair was falling out and it was clear that my body was in fight or flight mode, and that my bodily systems were now beginning to shut down. I eventually escaped that situation (and I mean, I literally had to escape - but that is a story for another time). When my dad picked me up from the airport, he actually walked straight past me. He didn't even recognise me! This is when my health journey started. I met with multiple medical specialists and endocrinologists who were all pressuring me to undergo radiation therapy or to remove my thyroid gland altogether. This didn't sit right with me so I decided to seek an alternate route. Looking back now, this was the catalyst for the making of MAKaesthetics. After working with many naturopaths, homeopaths and spiritual healers to bring me back to optimal health, I realised that this holistic approach to well-being really resonated with me. Doctors had told me that I was about to enter early menopause and that I would not be able to fall pregnant. So when I started dating my husband in March 2017, I disclosed this vital piece on information to him, only to fall pregnant 6 weeks later.. when I went to my doctor to tell her, she genuinely laughed in my face because she didn't believe me. At this time, I was working as a florist but once our son was born I knew this wasn't what I wanted to go back to. Prior to floristry, I was a phlebotomist (the person who takes your blood, scrapes your fungal infections, and swabs anything your body excretes). I was always fascinated with the body and its functions, and now with the holistic health platform directly in front of me, I started to form an idea of my future career. And then I fell pregnant again - I was 5 months postpartum and very overwhelmed with the thought of another baby. Fast forward to 2019, I was now a mum to a newborn and a 14 month old. Slowly but surely, I continued to make moves towards starting my own professional platform, however I still didn't have direction as to what exactly. I was just learning and studying, assuming I would work it out along the way. Throughout this time, I was also going through my own postpartum slump where I felt generally underwhelmed when I looked at myself in the mirror. Through this experience, I discovered body contouring and gave it a go - I was AMAZED at how this tech worked. Fat Cavitation and RF Skin Tightening became my new focus, which is how I pivoted into the beauty industry. By early 2020, I had my business planned out and ready to open the doors. At this stage, I was offering only body contouring and teeth whitening while I continued studying in the background. As we all know, 2020 was a year of WTF and by the time I did open my business, we were heading into lockdown (for the rest of the year). I feel like life was on pause for this time. In December 2020, we moved to Brisbane where I relaunched MAKaesthetics in Holland Park. It was slow to begin with, since the treatments I offered were mostly unheard of and it felt like when I would explain how it worked to everyone, they thought I was some kind of witch or was trying to sign them up to a pyramid scheme. Eventually, my client base started to increase and business was picking up! Since then, MAKaesthetics has continued to grow and evolve, becoming the incredible beauty and wellness space it is now. I have a team of amazing women working with me as we continue to learn and upskill to allow for personal and professional development in an industry that is consistently expanding. Currently, I am studying longevity wellness coaching to add another personalised element to our offerings and to elevate the MAK experience. Everything is exciting and ever changing around here! Thank you for reading and for your ongoing support. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to myself or my team. We are always happy to help! BIG BIG LOVE, Mel x

  • My Journey To Regaining Confidence Postpartum

Hi, my name is Kelly and I have recently completed my treatment plan with Mel from MAKaesthetics. I want to share my experience and my journey to help other mums and women in Brisbane who may need what MAKaesthetics has to offer. After having my baby, I decided it was time to start working on getting back into shape to regain my sense of self. Since becoming a mum to my beautiful daughter, life for me became a balancing act. Between taking care of my family, managing the household, and occasionally sneaking in some work, it's safe to say that "me-time" definitely took the back seat. When I found MAKaesthetics, that's when everything changed. Their approach to beauty and wellness really resonated with me as I knew that feeling AND looking good does generally start from the inside. I didn't know that holistic beauty even existed. Not to mention a way to reduce fat or tighten skin that didn't involve surgery or other invasive methods. When I went to my consultation, I had never felt more comfortable talking about my insecurities. Throughout my entire experience, Mel was nothing less than incredible. She put together a personalised care plan for me to achieve sustainable and achievable results. Not only do I look and feel SO much more confident when I look in the mirror but my clothes fit me again and having those few hours of 'me time' definitely elevated my mental health while on maternity leave. My body and mind feel stronger than ever which means I can be the best version of myself, not just for me but also for my husband and daughter. If you're like me, and you're searching for treatments that will accelerate your beauty and wellness goals, I encourage you to speak to the girls at MAKaesthetics. It's not just about looking good, it's about rediscovering and loving the parts of yourself you try to hide or don't have time for. I highly recommend Mel and her team.

  • Trials & Triumphs of Small Business.

As a business owner, I have experienced the incredible highs and faced the daunting lows of surviving small business. From the adrenaline rush of finally opening my doors to the public, to hiring my first employee - only to see her leave shortly after to start her own business (attempting to take my clients with her). Owning a business is a ROLLERCOASTER. Here is a glimpse into my journey so far.. The Highs The Joy of Creation: Starting your own business means bringing your vision to life. The initial stages are often filled with enthusiasm, creativity, and the satisfaction of building something from scratch. As a service-based business within the beauty and wellness space, helping clients look and feel their best is incredibly rewarding. Watching our clients grow and glow has to be the best part of the job, and the fact that we get to be such a huge part of so many people's self love journey still blows my mind to be honest. Success Stories: Witnessing my business evolve and thrive is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying aspects so far. Seeing client transformations, positive reviews pouring in, and a wildly expanding client base is a true testament to the countless hours of work and energy I've put into creating the MAKaesthetics brand. When I first started, I told myself if I could get just 30 clients on my books I would be ecstatic. Three years on, and we have 500+ clients on our books and this honestly makes my heart do a little dance. I still can't believe how much MAK has grown since I first launched my little business in Melbourne! Hiring My First Employee: The decision to hire your first employee is a significant milestone. It signifies that your business is flourishing and that you are ready to share your workload. It's a moment of pride and achievement. It can be terrifying, but growth = change and being able to accept change is fundamental to business growth. Strong Client Relationships: Being able to establish connections with people you wouldn't ordinarily meet anywhere else is amazing. The fact that we can create a space where strangers feel safe enough to open up and share intimate stories or express their inner emotions with us is beautiful. When clients become an extension of your own personal community, it creates such a warm and wonderful dynamic. The Lows Establishing Work-Life Balance: As a mum of 3, trying to find a happy balance between work and home life has been a STRUGGLE. I feel like I am performing a constant juggling act between being a mum, a wife, a boss, and a friend. All the while, trying to just exist and find time for myself. Taking it day by day seems to be the best approach right now. If anyone has any tips on nailing the work-life balance, definitely hit me up. I'd love to know the secret! Employee Departures: Losing employees, especially when they try to poach your clients, can be disheartening. It's essential to maintain trust with your team while also protecting your business interests. I haven't ever spoken about this officially, but it was a massive blow. On the plus side, this experience taught me a lot about myself and how resilient I am when facing adversity. It also lead me to Dana, who is my right-hand woman and has been fundamental to the growth happening within MAKaesthetics right now. Financial Uncertainty: Owning your own business often comes with financial unpredictability. There are times when revenue may not match expectations, and managing cash flow can become challenging. This is all part of the experience, and if I am being honest, the biggest motivation to keep striving for excellence. As business owners, we must embrace both the triumphs and challenges that come our way, using them as opportunities for growth and learning. In the end, it's these experiences that make the journey of small business a thrilling and rewarding ride. To our AMAZING clients, I personally thank you for your ongoing support. Obviously, without you, MAK does not exist. - Big love, Mel x
