Trials & Triumphs of Small Business.

As a business owner, I have experienced the incredible highs and faced the daunting lows of surviving small business. From the adrenaline rush of finally opening my doors to the public, to hiring my first employee - only to see her leave shortly after to start her own business (attempting to take my clients with her). Owning a business is a ROLLERCOASTER. Here is a glimpse into my journey so far..

The Highs

The Joy of Creation: Starting your own business means bringing your vision to life. The initial stages are often filled with enthusiasm, creativity, and the satisfaction of building something from scratch. As a service-based business within the beauty and wellness space, helping clients look and feel their best is incredibly rewarding. Watching our clients grow and glow has to be the best part of the job, and the fact that we get to be such a huge part of so many people's self love journey still blows my mind to be honest.

  1. Success Stories: Witnessing my business evolve and thrive is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying aspects so far. Seeing client transformations, positive reviews pouring in, and a wildly expanding client base is a true testament to the countless hours of work and energy I've put into creating the MAKaesthetics brand. When I first started, I told myself if I could get just 30 clients on my books I would be ecstatic. Three years on, and we have 500+ clients on our books and this honestly makes my heart do a little dance. I still can't believe how much MAK has grown since I first launched my little business in Melbourne!

  2. Hiring My First Employee: The decision to hire your first employee is a significant milestone. It signifies that your business is flourishing and that you are ready to share your workload. It's a moment of pride and achievement. It can be terrifying, but growth = change and being able to accept change is fundamental to business growth.

  3. Strong Client Relationships: Being able to establish connections with people you wouldn't ordinarily meet anywhere else is amazing. The fact that we can create a space where strangers feel safe enough to open up and share intimate stories or express their inner emotions with us is beautiful. When clients become an extension of your own personal community, it creates such a warm and wonderful dynamic.

The Lows

  1. Establishing Work-Life Balance: As a mum of 3, trying to find a happy balance between work and home life has been a STRUGGLE. I feel like I am performing a constant juggling act between being a mum, a wife, a boss, and a friend. All the while, trying to just exist and find time for myself. Taking it day by day seems to be the best approach right now. If anyone has any tips on nailing the work-life balance, definitely hit me up. I'd love to know the secret!

  2. Employee Departures: Losing employees, especially when they try to poach your clients, can be disheartening. It's essential to maintain trust with your team while also protecting your business interests. I haven't ever spoken about this officially, but it was a massive blow. On the plus side, this experience taught me a lot about myself and how resilient I am when facing adversity. It also lead me to Dana, who is my right-hand woman and has been fundamental to the growth happening within MAKaesthetics right now.

  3. Financial Uncertainty: Owning your own business often comes with financial unpredictability. There are times when revenue may not match expectations, and managing cash flow can become challenging. This is all part of the experience, and if I am being honest, the biggest motivation to keep striving for excellence.

MAKaesthetics Therapists

As business owners, we must embrace both the triumphs and challenges that come our way, using them as opportunities for growth and learning. In the end, it's these experiences that make the journey of small business a thrilling and rewarding ride. To our AMAZING clients, I personally thank you for your ongoing support. Obviously, without you, MAK does not exist.

- Big love,
